Department of Social Work

  The Department

Social Work Profession promotes social change to enhance the wellbeing of people. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to Social Work. Social Work intervenes at the points where people interact with their environments.

The Department of Social Work was started in the year 2002. We offer two years Postgraduate course and M.Phil (Part-time & Fulltime) research programme. In addition One year Certificate Course in Emergency Medical Care is offered. The Students are offered the following specializations.

  1. Human Resource Management
  2. Medical & Psychiatry (M&P) and
  3. Community Development.

As an integral part of Social Work programme, Field Work for two days a week is mandatory. It enables the students to acquire practical skills in working with people belonging to various social settings by applying theoretical knowledge.

The unique features of the department are Social Lab, Computer Lab and Audio-visual room. In Social Lab, the students are being taught to apply the skills in the field by practicing Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Street Theatre, Low Cost Communication tools (puppetry, flash card, flip chart, collage) etc. It helps the students equip themselves to conduct social awareness programmes which are related to current issues like AIDS, Child labour, Women's issue, Differently abled etc.

Apart from these, the students are given training in various avenues contributing to Holistic Development of the individual.

M. Phil. Social Work Eligibility is prescribed by the Bharathiar University and candidates are advised to refer to the university website. Application form and Prospectus can be obtained from the University.

Social Work Department is actively celebrating UN adopted dayslike Mental Health Day, Elders day etc at various institutions like NGO's, Hospitals, Companies, etc.

Extra - Curricular Activities

Students are motivated to participate in various symposia, seminars, conferences and present papers and to take part in intercollegiate competitions .

Soft Skills Training.

Rural Camp

Social work Students during their second semester have to undergo a one-week camp in rural setting to understand the various social problems and implement intervention strategies based on Social Work methods.

Social Lab

It provides a platform to put the theories into practice adhering to the various methods of Social Work and as per the need of the hour like Street Play, Puppetry, Collage, Brain Storming sessions.

Computer Lab

The Department has an exclusive Computer lab with internet facility to meet the educational needs of the present scenario.

Extension Activities

Awareness programme’s to the Urban / Rural community on current social issues through the medium of mime and street theatre.

Summer Placement & Block Placement

Summer Placement & Block Placement(Pre Employment Training) is compulsory and is intended to give the student an opportunity to work as a full time trainee in a selected organization in his/her field of specialization so as to learn the day-to-day role and tasks of a full time social worker for a period of four weeks after the even semesters examination.
