The Department of English Studies in consonance with its mission statement is committed to promoting an intellectual climate through artistic creation, critical mediation and innovative ideation. The Department inculcates critical reading of the self and the society among the students with the aim of moulding them into responsible and socially sensitive citizens. The Department facilitates their holistic development by building emotional, academic, social, professional and global competencies. Offers programme in BA, MA and M.Phil. in English.

Activities

ATHENA

The Department Library is named ATHENA. It has more than 2000 books including popular fiction, classics, biographies and inspirational books. In addition, the library has 500 World Classics in digital form. The library is intended to spread the habit of reading in the institution.

FLORA

It is the mini magazine edited and published by the students of the Department.

IELTS

The Department has an ambitious plan to provide need based IELTS training for students. The run up for the programme is at an advanced level.

CALT

The Department has a CALT (Computer Aided Language Teaching) programme. All first year students (Part II – Language) get an hour per week in the language laboratory as part of their curricular training. There is no prescribed time limit for any user.

The self learning programmes in the language laboratory and a multimedia teaching strategy improve the linguistic competency of the slow learners.

NIB

NIB is the manuscript magazine of the Department. It was inaugurated in 2009 by the famous novelist and Jnanapeeth Award winner Sri. M. T. Vasudevan Nair. It gives an opportunity for creative expression.

FILM SOCIETY – MAGNIFICIO

The Department has a Film Society called MAGNIFICIO. The society conducts regular film shows for its members. It also trains them to make short campus films. Workshops on film making are conducted every year. Experts in the field of Film Studies are invited to give lectures and conduct seminars. The Department plans to develop the society into CMS Centre for Film Studies.

BEC Programme [Cambridge University]

Business English Certificate is a programme conducted by the British Council. The Council and the Department of English prepare the students for the Cambridge University Certification programme known as BEC. Students are given training for three levels of BECPreliminary, Vantage and Higher. BEC has lifetime validity and it is universally recognized as the benchmark of efficiency in communication. It is also recognized as an essential qualification by more than 150 multinationals and business houses in India and abroad.

Language lab training for teachers and students

The Department of English conducts faculty training twice every year to update the Communication skills of the teachers of different disciplines. Teachers are encouraged to use the language lab as frequently as possible.
