The department was established as an allied department in the year 1988 when the college was started. The department is teaching mathematics and statistics as allied Courses in various other programs offered in the Department of Computer Science and Applications, Software Systems, Electronics, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Microbiology, Commerce, and Management. The department has sound infrastructural facilities in addition to a highly motivated team of faculty members. The department organizes regular seminars and various value-added programs for the holistic development of the students.
The department of Mathematics was elevated to the status of a major department in 2002. Starting with B.Sc Mathematics in the same year, the department successfully introduced a PG programme in Mathematics in 2004 followed by a research programme (M.Phil) in 2006. It was successful in guiding 85 candidates for M.Phil degree. The department has to its credit a number of rank holders and CSIR/NET qualified scholars. Our alumni are eagerly sought after in Arts & Science Colleges, Engineering Colleges as well as Research Institutions in India and abroad. Banking, IT and Software Programming also offer fertile fields to our students to display their talents.

Since 2010 every year the department celebrates Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birthday (December 22nd) to honor the great mathematician. The celebration aims at making awareness about his work among the college students. In a way it motivates the students to think and analyze in any situation. Thus it turns out to be a best practice of the department.
This year the same was celebrated for a week in December 2020. The students of the department arranged a Quiz programme on Vedic Mathematics and Paper Presentation on his life history and his number work. Students from various schools and colleges participated virtually and were benefitted.
The department students proved their organizing ability and leadership quality while improving their knowledge.
Different programmes for the students by the students were conducted to bring out their hidden talents and leadership qualities.
During the academic year 2020-2021 the department was spending quality time by conducting various activities in the midst of pandemic situation. The following activities were organized by the department for the overall development of the students not only of the department but the entire college, nearby colleges and nearby schools. It didn’t spare faculties also. And we continue…
The year activities started with workshops on Recent Trends in Mathematical Softwares –Sagemath and R-programming by Dr.V.Parthiban and Dr.A.David Maximgururaj, VIT,Chennai during 26th and 2th May 2020.
